Turn Scrambled Letters Into Words

You are staring at a rack of letters, a clue that will not budge, or a name you want to twist into something new. The Anagram Maker takes up to 15 letters and shows you the words that can be made from them, with filters to help you narrow things down. Use it as an anagram solver for word games, or as a playground for pen names, usernames and character names.

Using it costs nothing, you do not need an account, and your letters are not saved.

Use the Anagram Maker in Four Steps

  1. Type your letters. Enter up to 15 letters. Use a question mark in place of any letter you do not know.
  2. Add filters if you need them. Set what the word starts with, ends with or contains, or give a pattern.
  3. Choose how to see the results. Pick a word list, sort the list and choose a length.
  4. Save what you like. Add words to your favorites, or use Download TXT to keep the list.

What Is an Anagram?

An anagram is a word or phrase made by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase, using every letter once. The word comes from Greek roots that mean to turn back or to write again. Some classic examples show how neat the trick can be.

  • listen becomes silent
  • dormitory becomes dirty room
  • the eyes becomes they see
  • astronomer becomes moon starer
  • evil becomes vile, live and veil

Anagram Maker, Anagram Solver or Word Unscrambler?

These names are used for tools that do closely related jobs.

  • Anagram solver or word unscrambler: you enter scrambled letters and it lists real words you can make. This is what word-game players want.
  • Anagram maker or generator: you start from a word or a name and look for creative rearrangements, for example for a username or a pen name.
  • Anagram finder: it looks inside a set of letters for all the words hidden in them.

The Anagram Maker covers all three. The filters let you switch between a strict word search and a more playful one.

Anagrams for Word Games and Puzzles

When a rack of letters looks like nonsense, a solver can show you words you would never spot by eye. Enter your letters, use a question mark for a blank tile, and sort the results to find longer words first. For crosswords and jumbles, use the pattern and contains filters to match the letters you already know.

Anagrams for Names, Pen Names and Usernames

Pen names

Writers have long hidden their names inside other names. Vladimir Nabokov, for instance, used the character name Vivian Darkbloom, which rearranges his own name. To try it, type your first and last name and look for results that read like a real name.

Usernames and social handles

If your real name is taken everywhere, an anagram can give you something related but different. Pick a result that is easy to read and say, then check that the name is free where you want to use it. For help, try the Nickname Finder or the TikTok Username Generator.

Gamertags and character names

Rearrange a word or a name that matters to your story or your squad and look for something that sounds like a name. You may need to change a letter to make it easier to say. For more ideas, use the Gamertag Generator.

A Few Famous Anagrams

  • In the Harry Potter books, Tom Marvolo Riddle rearranges into I am Lord Voldemort.
  • The name of the singer Jim Morrison rearranges into Mr Mojo Risin, a line known from a famous song.
  • Nabokov’s Vivian Darkbloom rearranges into Vladimir Nabokov.

Tips for Better Anagrams

  • Balance vowels and consonants. A set with very few vowels gives few results. Try adding a question mark for a vowel.
  • Aim for eight to twelve letters when you want interesting results. Very short sets give few options, and very long sets are harder to search.
  • Try parts of a name. Drop a middle name, or use the first and last names separately.
  • Say it out loud. If it is hard to pronounce, it will be hard to remember.
  • Check the meaning. Make sure the result does not spell something unintended, in any language you care about.

Before You Use an Anagram as a Name

The Anagram Maker finds rearrangements. It does not check whether a name is taken, trademarked or suitable for your purpose.

  • Search the name online and see who already uses it.
  • Check the handle on the platforms you plan to use.
  • For a business or a pen name you plan to publish under, look for existing trademarks.
